Short answer: If your kitchen hood is capable of more than 400 CFM, many homes need a make-up air solution under IRC M1503.6 (where adopted). Plan it with your HVAC/installer before ordering the hood—not after drywall is closed.
Start with the CFM calculator, then browse range hoods. Related: ventilation checklist.
Disclaimer: Estimates and code references are general information. Your local code official and licensed installer have the final say.
Make-up air is outdoor air brought into the home to replace air a powerful hood exhausts. Without it, high-CFM hoods can create negative pressure.
IRC M1503.6 requires make-up air for kitchen exhaust hoods capable of more than 400 CFM in many jurisdictions that adopt that code. Local amendments vary.
Recirculating hoods do not exhaust outdoors, so they do not create the same make-up air demand—but they also do not remove combustion gases.
