Wall vs Island Range Hood CFM

Last updated: October 26, 2026.

Short answer: Wall hoods and island hoods are sized differently. Island installations typically need more CFM for the same cooktop width because capture is harder. Use HVI rates (100 vs 150 CFM per foot) plus the BTU method for gas.

FAQ

Do island hoods need more CFM?

HVI suggests about 150 CFM per foot for island hoods versus about 100 CFM per foot for wall hoods, because island hoods capture from more sides.

Should an island hood be wider than the cooktop?

Hoods are usually at least as wide as the cooktop; some designers prefer overhang. Check the hood manual.
