Kamado Joe Outdoor Kitchen Planner

Last updated: October 26, 2026.

Short answer: Pick the grill size first (Classic Joe 18" or Big Joe 24"), then decide between a cart or a built-in island, plan prep and landing space on both sides, and follow Kamado Joe's installation guidance for any built-in. Ceramic kamados are heavy and hot; check the manual for clearances and ventilation and have a pro review the island design.

Step 1: Choose a size

Classic Joe Big Joe
Grill diameter 18 in 24 in
Typical use Most family cooks Larger cooks and entertaining
Digital option Konnected Joe (18") Konnected Joe (24")

Confirm cooking area and heat range on the exact model page at kamadojoe.com before you finalize cabinetry.

Step 2: Cart or built-in?

  • Cart: easiest, movable, no construction.
  • Built-in island: finished look, but ceramic grills need airflow and heat management. Follow the installation section of your grill's manual, use non-combustible materials where it requires, and have a licensed contractor review the plan.

Kamado Joe's FAQ notes: for Classic/Big Joe, use ceramic feet for an air gap and do not place the grill directly on the table surface; keep front access for the ash drawer; do not let the tabletop make direct contact with the grill. Konnected Joe needs a bottom air hole (about 12.25" Classic / 16.5" Big Joe) and rear access to the power switch.

Step 3: Layout zones

  • Hot zone: grill + heat-proof landing space on at least one side
  • Prep zone: counter run for trays and tools
  • Cold zone: outdoor-rated fridge if needed
  • Clean zone: sink if plumbing is practical
  • Storage: weather-protected drawers for charcoal and accessories

Step 4: Utilities

  • Outdoor-rated (GFCI) outlet if you choose Konnected Joe — electrical work by a licensed electrician
  • Task lighting over grill and prep
  • Water line and drain only with a licensed plumber and local permits

Step 5: Protect the investment

  • Use a grill cover sized for the model
  • Register the grill: Kamado Joe's warranty covers the original purchaser; ceramic parts limited lifetime; metal/cast iron 5 years; electronics, heat deflectors, pizza stones 3 years; misc. parts and standalone accessories 2 years; labor not covered

FAQ

Which Kamado Joe sizes are there?

Classic Joe is 18 inches and Big Joe is 24 inches. Confirm the exact model page and manual for cooking area and heat range.

Does the Kamado Joe warranty cover labor?

No. Per Kamado Joe's warranty page, labor is not covered. Ceramic parts carry a limited lifetime warranty; other parts have shorter terms. Register the grill after delivery.

Can I build a Kamado Joe into a wood island?

Follow the installation section of your grill's manual, use non-combustible materials where required, keep airflow under the grill, and have a licensed contractor review the plan. Do not rely on this page for clearance numbers.

Cart or built-in?

A cart is movable and usually needs no construction. A built-in island looks finished but requires airflow, heat management, and manual-specific clearances.
